Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is an American actor widely regarded as one of the most accomplished screen performers of her generation. She has received a record number of Academy Award acting nominations and has won three, for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice and The Iron Lady.

Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey, in 1949. She studied drama at Vassar College and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale School of Drama, where she appeared in a wide range of stage productions.

After work in New York theatre in the mid-1970s, Streep moved into film with roles in Julia and The Deer Hunter. Her performance in Kramer vs. Kramer brought her a first Academy Award, and she continued through the 1980s and 1990s with leading roles in Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa and The Bridges of Madison County. Later decades brought commercially successful films including The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia! and The Post.
