Denzel Washington is an American actor, producer and director known for commanding dramatic performances in film and theatre. He has won two Academy Awards, for Glory and Training Day.
Early life
Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1954. He studied at Fordham University, where he began acting, and later trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
Career journey
He first became widely known through the television series St. Elsewhere before moving to film. A supporting Academy Award for Glory was followed by leading roles in Malcolm X, Philadelphia, The Hurricane and Training Day, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has also directed features including Antwone Fisher, The Great Debaters and Fences.
