Editorial policy
The rules we hold ourselves to when writing about real people.
- Sourcing
- Every factual claim is drawn from reliable published references, which are listed at the foot of each biography. We do not publish claims we cannot trace.
- No invented detail
- We do not invent dates, relationships, qualifications, awards, quotes, sources or financial figures. Fields we cannot verify are hidden rather than filled in.
- Personal life
- We cover personal life only where it is publicly documented and relevant to a person's work, and we write it plainly and respectfully. We do not publish gossip, rumour or intrusive detail.
- Images
- Portraits are commissioned illustrations credited on the page. We do not publish photographs without appropriate permission or licensing.
- Review and updates
- Profiles carry the name of the writer and the dates of publication and last update. Substantive changes are made on the page itself.
- Corrections
- Anyone can report an error using the corrections form. We review every report and amend the page where a correction is warranted.
